The Gastein valley was already settled by the Romans more than 2000 years ago. Already at that time the healing power of thermal water was recognized. In the following centuries, the Celts engaged in gold mining in Gastein, which brought considerable prosperity to the valley. The name “Gastein” was first mentioned in a document in 1203.

More than 50 years ago, the people of Gastein set out again to mine gold ore, as they had done many times in earlier years. At an altitude of 1,280 m, a new adit was driven into the mountain for this purpose.
The search for gold was unsuccessful, but this disappointment for the mining industry was also to be a great achievement for the health sector:
In fact, geologists noticed the increase of air and rock temperature (up to 44 degrees) under relative humidity from a certain tunnel depth.
After intensive research, the medical clinic of the University of Innsbruck confirmed the healing value of the Gastein Stollen.
The tunnel train takes you 2.5 km into the interior of the mountain, where the heat and high humidity cause the body to heat up to 38°C.
Radon absorption is increased and thus the metabolism of the cells is stimulated. Individual adaptation to the respective clinical picture and heat tolerance.
